The New Star In Biological Medicine
 |
Wild Yam (Dioscoreaceae, Dioscorea) known as Shan Yao, another common name is colic root. Belongs to the bulb roots species and the active ingredients are in the rhizome. It not only could be consumed as vegetable but also as herb traditionally used to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, anemia, diarrhea, reduce fatigue, increase stamina and muscle mass. It is also commonly used as an expectorant, digestive stimulant, tonic for the spleen, stomach and kidney. Wild Yam has a neutral character and generally taste bitter in most species or sweet in some. It is the tonic herb for lungs, spleen and kidneys as well as muscle relaxant, antispasmodic and anti-ageing properties.
The American Wild Yam is one of the 700 over species of yam found in the world. The active component Diosgenin was identified in 1930s by Tsukamono and Marker separately. Independent reports were published in The Japanese Medical Journal and The American Medical Journal. In 1947, Mr Marker presented his paper that Diosgenin could be converted into an important hormone for the human body --- Progesterone. Diosgenin has the chemical properties as the precursor for Progesterone. Working as the raw ingredient for the hormonal needs of the human body, various important hormones are synthesized and released into the endocrine system of the human body for regulation of different bodily functions. This becomes the process of the auto production of natural “self hormone”. With the increase in age, the body’s endocrine system become sluggish which in turn cause the ageing of body organs, the reasonable and timely restoration and regulation of hormonal balance will not only slow down the ageing process but also restore youth and vitality. |
